RBS Radio: Giving Students a Voice Beyond the Classroom

At Reach British School in Abu Dhabi, learning goes beyond textbooks and classrooms.

27-10-2026

Through RBS Radio, students are discovering the power of their voices, developing confidence and gaining real-world experiences in broadcasting, communication and leadership.

As part of the International Schools Partnership (ISP), Reach British School is committed to creating meaningful learning opportunities that help students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed beyond school.

What began as a school broadcasting initiative has grown into a platform where students lead interviews, produce podcasts, report on school events and connect with audiences locally and internationally.

New Programmes, More Opportunities to Learn

RBS Radio continues to expand, introducing programmes that encourage students to explore their interests, develop new skills and take ownership of their learning.

  • Relate in Eight is a student-led interview programme where students have eight minutes to discover the people behind Reach British School. From educators and school leaders to special guests, students develop their questioning, listening and communication skills through meaningful conversations.
  • Read with Reach brings storytelling to the airwaves, encouraging a love of reading while giving students opportunities to share stories and develop confidence in speaking aloud.
  • Reach Responds strengthens communication between school and home by inviting parents to submit questions through written messages, audio or video. School leaders and educators then respond, creating an additional platform for open dialogue.

Together with student news, podcasts and live event coverage, these programmes provide practical opportunities for students to apply skills developed through the school's British curriculum.

Bringing Parents Closer to School Life

At Reach British School, strong relationships between students, parents and educators are central to creating a supportive learning environment.

RBS Radio helps strengthen these connections by making school experiences more accessible to families.

Parents can listen to live broadcasts through The Hub, watch student-led podcasts on Reach British School official YouTube channel, or catch up on conversations through Reach British School Radio on Spotify.

From interviews with school leaders to Coffee Mornings and special celebrations, families can stay connected with important moments in their children's school experience, even when they cannot attend in person.

Looking ahead, the station aims to welcome more parents as guests, encouraging them to share their professional experiences, interests and expertise with students.

This reflects the wider ISP approach to learning, where meaningful experiences and connections help students understand the world beyond their classrooms.

Student Voices Reaching Over 46 Countries

One of RBS Radio's proudest achievements came when students delivered their first external live broadcast at the British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) Annual Conference in Abu Dhabi.

The broadcast reached listeners in more than 46 countries, giving students the opportunity to communicate with a genuine international audience.

For the young broadcasters, this was more than a school activity. It was an opportunity to represent Reach British School, work as a team and demonstrate their communication skills in a real-world setting.

As a member of the International Schools Partnership, Reach British School also sees opportunities to connect RBS Radio with other ISP schools, encouraging future collaborations and conversations between students across different countries and cultures.

Developing Confidence, Leadership and Life Competencies

Behind every successful broadcast is a learning journey.

Students research topics, prepare scripts, develop interview questions, operate broadcasting equipment and collaborate to deliver programmes for real audiences.

These experiences help develop essential life competencies, including communication, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, digital literacy and leadership.

For some students, stepping behind the microphone means overcoming nervousness. For others, it provides opportunities to lead, make decisions and discover new interests.

As Zain, a Year 13 student, shares:

“RBS Radio has given me the confidence to speak in front of other people and try something I would never normally have done. Knowing that parents and people outside school are listening makes it feel real and makes us want to do the best job we can.”

Kirsty Robertson from the RBS Radio team highlights the personal growth behind the broadcasts:

“The most exciting thing about RBS Radio is not simply how much the station has grown, but how much our students grow through being part of it. You can see a student begin nervously behind a microphone and, over time, become someone who can interview a guest, lead a broadcast, think on their feet and communicate confidently with an audience.”

The Next Chapter: More Voices, More Connections

The future of RBS Radio is focused on expanding opportunities for students and strengthening connections across the school community.

Plans include introducing more student-led podcasts, involving additional year groups, welcoming parents and special guests, and increasing live coverage of school events, including House competitions.

The station also hopes to collaborate with other schools within the ISP network, creating opportunities for students to exchange ideas, share experiences and connect with peers internationally.

At its heart, RBS Radio reflects what learning at Reach British School is all about: helping students grow in confidence, discover their strengths and develop skills that prepare them for life beyond school.
